  • What is Shou Shu?

Shou Shu is a unique martial art that combines combative self-defense with a technique designed to disarm and stop multiple attackers with a single sequence of moves.

  • What does Shou Shu mean?

Shou Shu translates to "The Fighting Way of the Beasts," and true to its name, there are 7 beast styles we instruct.

Each is unique and has its own strengths and weaknesses. The more beasts you learn, the more styles and skill sets you have to take from in a combative situation to be most effective.

  • How old do you have to be to take martial arts training?

Martial arts classes in Shou Shu start at age 4.

  • Is it safe to practice martial arts?

Martial arts can be safe and beneficial for any level, age, or physical ability. The key to staying safe is to find an instructor who can work with your ability and any limitations you may have.

Shou Shu has designed its instruction to be attainable for anyone, and Shi Gung Kemp has experience teaching individuals of all ages and physical abilities, including (but not limited to) students in a wheelchair, children with special needs, physically-limited older practitioners, and more!

Safety is our main priority. We invite you to contact us directly with any specific safety concerns.

  • What are the benefits of martial arts?

Martial arts have many benefits, including physical exercise, self-confidence, weight loss, improved focus and concentration, athletic improvement, and guidance on morals and values.

You may find that as you continue with martial arts, you'll start to eat better, sleep better, and have an improved attitude about life.

Martial arts training also requires you to work with other people, and develop a relationship with your community in your studio, which can reduce feelings of isolation and depression and improve your emotional health as well.

There is little that is as valuable as being around like-minded people that are working together to improve your health.

  • How many classes should I attend a week?

It depends on you and your schedule! We do our best to make classes available regularly and at different times. We also teach private classes. No two students are alike, and their needs will vary. Give us a call and we can help you figure out the best schedule for you or your child.

  • Will my child stick with martial arts?

We design our kids' program to include rewards and incentives for them to stay focused on their training. We also make our children's classes playful and fun so that they are learning Shou Shu while they enjoy themselves.

  • What do I wear to my first class?

Wear modest athletic comfortable clothing that you can easily move in, similar to what you would wear to a gym. If you have any questions, contact us at (916) 838-9432.

  • Are students required to spar?

No, you don't have to spar if you are not comfortable. However, we do encourage at a certain level, training sparring to help you internalize the techniques you have learned. Private sparring sessions are also available with an instructor.

When sparring, protective gear is always worn. In a group class, you'll be placed with a sparring partner that can help you earn – usually a higher belt that will work with you on your moves and help with your technique.

You are required to bring clean sparring equipment to help prevent germs from spreading. We have clean loaner equipment available sometimes, please ask in advance.

  • How much does it cost to take classes?

Please call us for our current rates and specials at (916) 838-9432. We offer discounts also for multiple-child enrollment or dual parent/child enrollment.
